There were 6,528 new patents issued at the US Patent Office for the week of July 13, 2021, not counting the Design and Reissue patents.
Below is the breakdown by states.
Some of the top Chinese entities that are issued new US patents almost every week.
The table below are some of the top Assignees of the week.
The top ten longest time to patent grant for the week. Cerner Innovation, Inc comes in first place with a total of 6,452 days from filing to issuance. The patent is titled “Weldable component of structural steel and method of manufacture”.
The top ten shortest time to patent grant for the week was between 90 and 112 days. Well done to the teams!
Blockchain patents continue to be issued at a fast pace with another 31 this week. Advanced New Technologies was issued 6 new blockchain patents this week. The next closes was IBM with three.
There were just six new electric vehicle patents.
There were eight Lidar related patents issued this week. Newcomer $AEVA added another patent. Nuro and SOS Labs added one patent each. I am unfamiliar with both of them and will have to dig into them.
The “Rapid Fire”
Engine Media Holdings, Inc $GAME filed a patent lawsuit against Draftkings $DKNG in New Jersey alleging infringement of two patents. Patents 9,878,243 and 10,721,543. This will be an interesting case to follow. Draftkings might try to file an early summary judgment motion on 101 ineligible subject matter. This case will get interesting after the IPRs are filed and the institution decision. The venue is in my home state and if it gets to trial I will definitely attend.
Aurora Innovation announced they are going public through SPAC with $RTPY at a $13B valuation. I found the company in my Lidar chart a few months back. They bought Uber’s autonomous driving unit back in December 2020. I am really curious to read their presentation and forecasts. I will start digging into their patent holdings and I am curious how they compare and differ to the other Lidar players.
Jonathan Stroud from Unified Patents had an interesting academic paper published about National Security concerns with patents granted to Chinese companies and ownership disclosures. I am going to have to file the patent filings closer as tech companies in China are filing and being granted a lot of patents in cutting edge technology. This could have material affects on US tech companies and possibly expose them to competition, some costly litigation or damages. Huawei settled their patent suit a few days into the jury trial with Verizon this past week. I think this might be the first of many patent cases filed by Chinese companies versus US companies in the United States.
I am kicking around starting a separate “China Patent” blog series instead of the Blockchain/Crypto patent one I have been putting together.
